PechaKucha Night Cleveland Vol. 14

by Dave Harris

on February 14, 2012

PechaKucha is Japanese for “sound of conversation”. It’s a night filled with 12-14 creative people in the city presenting about their interests/passions/etc. The format is what makes it particularly different… you have 20 images and 20 seconds to present each one.

Here, Tec4Life Founder & President Dave Harris talks about the project we did in the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio this past year. A highway project was supposed to divide through back in the ’60s, but residents protested and stopped it from happening. The Intergenerational School commissioned Harris to organize the students and older folks to do an oral history project that was then put into a beautiful Legacy memoir.

Are you ready for another “howling” good time?  Join us Thursday, September 15 at 9:30 a.m. for the “dog” event of the year at the Wadsworth Center for Older Adults.  ALL dog owners and dog lovers are invited to come and watch the parade featuring 25+ local dogs along King Street (off High Street adjacent to the Center and Grace Lutheran Church).  After the parade from 10:30-12:30 p.m. there will be educational stations inside the Center where ALL IN THE COMMUNITY are invited to learn about pet adoption, pet first aid, grooming, training, veterinary care and yes, even Reiki for dogs.

Tec4Life’s Dave Harris will MC the event and during the parade our panel of three judges—Wadsworth Mayor Robin Laubaugh, Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack and Krista Shirley of Petco—will select eight prize-winning dogs based on the following categories: best dressed, cutest, best behaved, most personality, most unique trick, owner look-alike, judges’ choice, and most obedient.  All parade participants receive treats courtesy of Bil-Jac, handmade dog bandanas courtesy of Wadsworth’s most recent “Key to the City” winner, Cathy Hall, and a complimentary photo courtesy of a local pet photographer.  Parade contest winners will also receive a framed certificate signed by the judges and our guest of honor, Dick Goddard of Cleveland’s Fox 8 News!

For those who aren’t able to make the parade, the educational activities inside the Center offer dog owners and spectators the opportunity to learn about caring for their four-legged friends and the chance to win one of many dog-themed door prizes donated by the Foundation’s Professional Friends!  Winners do not need to be present to win.

The Wadsworth Center for Older Adults is located in Downtown Wadsworth, just north of the square at 138 High Street (SR-94) across from City Hall and Huntington Bank, between The Ritzman Center and Grace Lutheran Church.

Proms are for Seniors

by Dave Harris

on April 12, 2011

What do you get when you mix seniors with springtime?  Prom, of course!  High school seniors everywhere are eager for this night-of-all-nights to come each year so that they can dance away their raging hormones and create memories that will last a lifetime.  Well, why shouldn’t senior citizens have prom nights, too?  For senior citizens in Wadsworth, Ohio this past weekend, they looked back upon some of their youthful elegance and innocence for a night that was just for them.

I had the incredible honor of serving as MC for this year’s Senior Citizens Prom, presented by the Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation and Professional Friends.  Talk about collaboration and support from fine individuals and their associated organizations!  We are quite fortunate to be living in a time when so many people are committed to enhancing the quality of life for our esteemed and revered senior citizens.  The event wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the many in-kind contributions of volunteering professionals.  Students from Wadsworth High School assisted teacher Dwain Kibler in decorating the Wadsworth Middle School Cafeteria/Auditorium (Cafetorium) into a wondrous ballroom.  A buffet of gourmet hors d’oeuvres was donated for all to enjoy (Courtesy of Wadsworth Pointe-Saber Healthcare), whimsical centerpieces were crafted by a local artisan and given as door prizes (Courtesy of Barb Leatherman, Hospice of Wadsworth-Rittman), and each guest took home a keepsake photo (Courtesy of Home Instead) and a tin of mints (Courtesy of Magnolia Village)!  We even crowned a king and queen as they danced to the theme song “When You Wish Upon a Star.”  Everyone enjoyed the music of the ‘50s and ‘60s by the talented four-piece “Good Grief!” Band from Akron, Ohio.

The primary function this event serves is to provide a venue for an enjoyable social affair.   The Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation is all about improving quality of life for senior citizens in the community.  They support events and programs coordinated with the Center for Older Adults that go above and beyond congregate meals and bingo games.  At the prom, seniors mingled with friends old and new, reflecting back on their younger years and the good times they’re blessed to have today.  Some rhythmically swayed back and forth on the dance floor, while others showed off their range of motion to their friends, just as though they were 17 again!

Well the night ended up featuring an element of surprise… the University of Akron Competitive Ballroom Dance Team showed up unannounced to join our guests!  They occasionally tapped the shoulders of our guests and danced with them.  The instructor and his partner even gave us a waltz performance that was off the charts!  So the question for next year’s senior prom is: Why not bring younger and older adults into the mix?  We certainly know the power of encouraging their exchange of ideas and activities.  On and off the dance floor, passion for the fun side of life filled the air.

As we are amidst prom season, high school seniors certainly aren’t the only ones joining in the fun.  Encourage and advocate for more events like this.  Maybe your loved one won’t necessarily go to a prom for senior citizens, but encourage them to get out and enjoy an evening where they can be with friends and perhaps they’ll break out into dance or song!  Either way, it’s a great way to stroll down memory lane as new memories are created.
